Sara Kozak
Koz
Hudson House Media founder Sara Kozak – or, “Koz,” as she’s known throughout the industry – was senior vice president, head of production at Warner Bros. Discovery for over 17 years, where she led nonfiction content for Investigation Discovery (ID) and the streaming platform MAX, overseeing production of thousands of hours of unscripted content.
Under her leadership, Investigation Discovery became America’s #1 true crime destination.
Life In Production
Sara Kozak is an innovator, a visionary leader and, above all, a storyteller. With more than forty years of experience in both the UK and US markets, “Koz” has launched and led some of television’s most iconic series and specials. She has collaborated with some of the most successful production companies in the US and Europe and built a team of some of the television industry’s most creative storytellers, made up of vice presidents, executive producers and producers. Under her leadership, Investigation Discovery became America’s number one true crime destination.
During the early part of her career, she was a producer, director, event producer and sports journalist, appearing with David Frost and Michael Parkinson live on TVAM. In the late 1980s, she specialized in military documentaries – developing and directing the prime time hit Bomb Disposal Man, for BBC1. In 2002, Kozak series produced the first season of Saturday Kitchen for the BBC, just one of many highly successful food programmes she worked on. Prior to joining Discovery Communications, Koz served as series producer for BBC Productions USA, launching TLC’s hit series What Not To Wear and three seasons of While You Were Out.
Before joining the ID team, Kozak was vice president of production for Discovery’s Emerging Networks, where she executive produced several hit series, including the Science Channel’s Emmy-nominated Through The Wormhole with Morgan Freeman. Prior to this, Kozak was senior executive producer for Discovery Channel, where she steered a range of series and specials including Two Weeks In Hell, Destroyed In Seconds and UFOs Over Earth. Previously, she was senior executive producer for TLC, launching the enduringly popular series Say Yes To The Dress in 2007.
Koz and her team helmed many of Warner Bros. Discovery’s marquee series, including the groundbreaking Evil Lives Here, House of Hammer, The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, and Jared From Subway: Catching A Monster. Koz also served as an executive producer on Werner Herzog’s Into The Abyss – a critically acclaimed feature documentary for Investigation Discovery.
Why Hudson House Media?
When I decided to leave Warner Bros Discovery many people asked me “what next?” Some assumed I’d form a Production Company and start pitching crime shows, but that wasn’t my first thought. The climate is far from conducive for boutique Prod Co’s and though it might be fun for the gamekeeper to turn poacher, why do ‘just one thing’ when a Consultancy offers so many options for creativity and collaboration.
My experience as a producer, director, writer and Network Exec, is deep and broad. Murder, mystery, suspense and explosive shock docs have been my world for 14 years, but I’ve touched pretty much every genre from fashion, home makeover and food, to adrenaline-fueled high adventure; from Military documentaries to Countryfile…. so why not harness this wealth of experience and help others succeed?
Truth is, we all need fresh perspectives and ideas, and most importantly, we need to hear the truth. I’ve gained a reputation for straight talk, but I can deliver tough messages in a way that’s compassionate and collaborative. Whatever the issue, whether it’s creative or managerial, I will have ideas and I can offer solutions.
Oh, and one more thing… it’ll be fun, too. Life’s too damn short not to enjoy what we do. Looking forward to talking…
– Koz
